South West Area Bi-Monthly Newsletter
Area Co-ordinators Chris & Anita Read

Welcome to the April issue of the South West Area Newsletter.
On the evening of Saturday 26th February approximately 30 members met at the Blue Ball in Sidford for a meal. Much enjoyed by all. We then drove the short distance to the Observatory/
It was beautiful clear night for our visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory. Due to this being the first clear night for some time the world and his wife turned out for the occasion. There were around two hundred members of the public, which much surprised the organisers.
We were initially shown a presentation of the constellations we might expect to see in the winter sky. We then visited the three telescopes that were focused on Orion’s belt. The tour concluded with a presentation in the Plantetarium of the night sky above Sidmouth.

On Wednesday 9th March members met at the Crown & Sceptre, Newton St Cyres for a meal prior to a presentation that was given to members by a Police Sargeant who specialises in road collision investigation. This proved very enlightening, with detailed explanations about various causes of how collisions occur. The officer explained in detail the roles of investigating officers and other agencies.

MX5 Charity Collection Box (Model MX5)
This year we have made donations to The Devon Air Ambulance and The RNLI.
The money-box is available at all meetings and drives. Each time £50 has been collected it will be donated to one of the chosen charities. Please continue to give to these good causes.
